But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 1 Peter 3:15

I woke up this morning thinking about tinder—the little pieces of dry paper, cloth, straw and such that people used to carry with them in a tinderbox so that they would always be able to start a fire. I wonder how many believers carry spiritual tinder and could confidently light a fire in a non-believer’s heart with it.  Do you have a few key verses of love and hope memorized and securely tucked away in your heart?  How about a few stories of times when God made a way for you when there was no way? Nothing is more powerful than a personal testimony that relates how God is always near and as deeply interested in our individual lives as a loving father is in his beloved child. I love to recount some of the amazing stories from the old and new testaments when God showed up and did what man could not do for himself. Can you tell those stories and your own? By the way, God didn’t give us a spirit of fear so let’s not use the devil’s method to present the best news of all time!  Why scare people with stories of hell when the truth of God’s amazing love and grace will be more than enough to get the flame started?

Ask yourself—why do I believe that God is real and that His love for me endures forever? If you have no answer, maybe you are not yet fully persuaded yourself and you need to start there.  Tell God that you want to know Him personally and see Him moving in your life. Let Him take control of your circumstances and handle them His way. I can almost guarantee it won’t be what you’re expecting—Gideon certainly didn’t think God would tell him to come up against a mighty enemy army with 300 men carrying lit candles in clay jars and trumpets!  And yet, through this strategy the battle was won! Abraham and Sarah didn’t expect to have a baby after years of barrenness and old age…You get the idea.  So seek God in your life first and foremost and when He wins your confidence, practice telling your stories and sharing His promises.  Let’s light up the world with His love and grace!

But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.

Read Proverbs 1:33, NIV

One of the key job search objectives that the Lord has in mind for believers is continuous peace. What’s more, He wants us to have this peace not just during the time of unemployment but for the rest of our lives. If we can experience His peace during our job search, when everything looks shaky and out of control, we know that we will be able to stay in peace for the rest of our lives! In this scripture we are given the strategy for achieving peace; we have to listen to Him and act on His instruction. We have to abide His Word paying attention to only what He tells us. When there’s a dispute between the messages of the world and the word of God, we need to make sure we’re tuned into the right channel. Isn’t His perfect peace worth the effort?
I am a child of God and I live in peace.

I demonstrate the message of peace, hope and freedom from fear.

God keeps me untroubled because my mind is fixed on Him.

…we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.

Read Ephesians 1:9, NIV

Take heart and be encouraged.  You are eternally connected to Jesus Christ and nothing can change that.  You have been adopted into the royal household of God Almighty and your inheritance is awaiting you.  God chose you, in advance, before you ever set foot on earth, and He is working everything out according to the plan He has for you.  And that’s not all.  Jeremiah 29:11 says His plan is a good one and you’re going to like it.  So relax, God’s got you and He’ll never let go.  Just keep on knocking on doors, doing the good works He gives you to do today, walking in the fullness of His love and pouring it out on others. Stay surrendered and obedient to the Spirit to the best of your ability and trust His grace to see you through.  The rest is up to Him and He’s faithful to do what He has promised.
• I am at peace and filled with joy because I know how everything turns out.

• I am so glad that I am on the winning side and my victory is guaranteed in Christ.

• By faith, I receive my inheritance from Christ now, in this life.

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Read 1 Peter 5:7, NLT

This just doesn’t seem right to many of us.  How can we behave as adults and not worry about things?  Don’t we have to expend a little fretting and stressing f we really want something to happen?  Apparently not.  His Word is clear — give your concerns to Him and fear not.  In fact to behave in such a manner is insulting to God.  He views worry, fear and anxiety as a vote of “no confidence” in His Son and His Word.  Either you believe He cares for you and is willing and able to handle all that concerns you or you don’t.  Which is it?  The right choice is clear.  And as soon as you give God all your cares, concerns, and anxieties you’ll be amazed at the energy and creativity you have for other things.
• I have no cares. I have a good and faithful shepherd to watch over me.

• God will perfect and handle everything that concerns me.

• I rise up and lie down in peace and without the burden of care.

God will make this happen, for He who calls you is faithful.

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:24, NIV

Isaiah 60:22 puts it this way, “I am the Lord and in its time I will do this swiftly.”  This really means what it says— the Lord will make things happen.  It isn’t all up to us  That’s an intriguing idea, isn’t it?  It’s tremendously comforting as well.  Our God makes promises and always delivers on them…as we meet the conditions He sets for us. He never let’s Himself off the hook, He just declares, “I will do it because I am faithful.” When we fail He is faithful to forgive us and put us back on track. In 1 Thessalonians God promises to preserve us blameless until Christ comes; in other places He promises to care for us and lead us in triumph. We can count on Him and that’s good news, if there ever was any!
• I can always overcome because God is the One who brings the victory.

• I know my God is willing and able to care for me.  He never fails.

• My trust is in the Lord and in the power and authority of His name.

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Read 1 Corinthians 10:31, NLT

Don’t think this doesn’t apply to you because you’re not working. And you’re not off the hook because you work in a bad place or a temporary job that “doesn’t count.”   This word says that even when we’re eating or drinking we’re supposed bring God glory, so obviously this is a full time assignment. And that raises an interesting question.  How can we bring God glory when we’re unemployed?  What can we do in our families to glorify God when we’re not bringing in any income? Get busy, that’s what.  Be excellent at the job search process, spend precious time with the Lord in worship, intercede for others in prayer, share leads and encouragement with other job seekers…the possibilities are endless. He is worthy of glory so bring it!
• I am an ambassador for Christ and I know the world is watching me.

• I glorify God with my every word and action.  I am never “off duty.”

• Christ in me brings hope to a dark and frightened world.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me

will do the same works I have done, and even greater works…”

Read John 14:12, NLT

What are you going to do with this scripture, ignore it?  Our Lord said that anyone who believes in Him will as He did.  That means me, you, and every other believer.  We have been given the ability to do the same amazing and great works because His spirit now resides in us! We have His love inside us, His mind, His spirit…in other words, we’re completely equipped.  The problem is with believers and our failure to “believe in Him.” You are on the path to greatness. Nothing will stop you unless you permit it.  If you don’t absolutely believe that Jesus is who He says He is and we can do what He says we can, get there.  Don’t wait for feelings or “confirmations” or anything.  Just decide to believe. Then, by faith, step up to the works God gives you to do. Let Him lead you into jobs that are too big for you and work that is too challenging.  If He brings you to it, say “Yes” and go for the greater works.  You can do it.  Jesus said so!
• I am on my way to my God-ordained destiny.

• My faith grows and deepens with time and patience.

• I have what it takes to do great works for the Kingdom of God because Christ lives in me.

but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Read Romans 8:13, NIV

Isn’t this amazing?  We’re the ones who get to choose whether we live an abundant and eternal life or refuse God’s offer of grace and die. We decide if we will allow the Holy Spirit to give us the power to overcome evil or if we want to continue to struggle and fail and struggle some more.  The best choice is rather obvious, isn’t it? But there is a price to be paid and it is complete self surrender. Abundant life, eternal life, the quality of life that God wants for us, can only be obtained by our habitually making the choice to deny our natural desires and obey the Spirit in us.  With the Spirit’s empowerment, we put to death evil deeds and, with them, all the limitations of our worldly nature.  It’s time to go forth in our employment searches in the strength of the Lord and in the confidence that eternal, God-quality life is already working in us.
• I have the guarantee of eternal life with Christ and nothing change that.

• The Holy Spirit is at work in me to perfect me and He is faithful to complete that work.

• Everything that I really need, I already have and by faith I receive it.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news, the good news of peace and salvation, the news that the God of Israel reigns! Read Isaiah 52:7, NLT

This scripture will completely transform your approach to the job search process as you realize that you are the messenger with the good news.  Jesus, your Lord and Savior, has purchased your eternal life in God’s Kingdom and abundant life right here and now.  You have forgiveness and wisdom and peace.  You have been given blessings of Christ that are priceless and without number.  You live far above the world  filled with darkness, fear, greed and danger. So, as you go out to interviews, meet strangers, run errands, volunteer your services and interact with others bring the light of God with you. People expect job seekers to be worried, desperate and down-trodden.  What a demonstration it will be as you walk in with the peace of God.  So conduct a little test.  For the next week walk around like you really have GOOD NEWS.  See if people ask you why you’re so happy and  be a messenger of the gospel.  They will look forward to your coming and you’ll probably be invited back!
• I go nowhere empty-handed.  I bring life, and light, and truth with me.

• I know the good news of Christ and my life reflects it.

• I am welcome wherever I go because I bring peace and good news.

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will …

Read 1 Thessalonians 5:18, NLT

You don’t have to be thankful FOR all circumstances, just thankful in the midst of them. There are those who teach that believers need to thank God for all the terrible things they experience, that they must be blessings in disguise.  Well some of them are disguised very well but they’re not blessings!  We have an Enemy who would like us to believe that God is causing us harm and that’s a lie.  In this world we will experience tragedy, trials and persecution, and God isn’t causing them.  What allows us to give thanks in those circumstances is the absolute assurance that God has already made a way out for us! Praise God for all He has already done and encourage yourself in His goodness and love. Then focus on what God has promised and how you’ll feel when the victory is yours.  Now, enjoy the peace that makes it possible to give thanks in all circumstances.
• I am grateful for my life and all the promise that it holds.

• God has already blessed with so much that I can’t help but thank Him.

• I know God will bring me through to victory so I give Him praise now.
